Kinja'd!!!

I had my orthopedist appointment this morning. Yep, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , but they took off the splint that the ER gave me on Wednesday night and replaced it with this boot. That gray circle you see at the top is an air pump that can pump up the inside of the boot, just like a Reebok Pump shoe!

I entered this thread to disagree with your assessment of your boot but by the end I was completely onboard.

So is this a surgery or time will heal type of injury? Is your calf curled up into a ball? This type of injury has me on major cringe just thinking about it.

I’m having surgery next Wednesday. The surgeon said that there’s a possibility of putting it in a cast that puts the tendon in the right spot for it to heal itself but it requires very specific physical therapy and the results from surgery are still better . It’s just the recovery from surgery is more intense than trying to let it heal on its own. The way he described it to me was if I tried the non-surgical option , in 3 months it could be alright or could end up needing surgery anyway. But for the sturdiest repair best to get surgery. I’d rather just get the surgery now so I can start up the physical therapy sooner than later. I’m a big strong guy, I’m like whatever, fuck it, bring on the PT .

My leg isn’t all that gnarly looking or painful right now. With the splint and now the boot I can put a little weight on the foot. All the other ankle tendons are still intact but the achilles snapped right about half way between the ankle and calf. I’m a little swollen in that area on the back of the leg but nothing major.

For the first week after surgery I won’t be able to put any weight on that foot but from there I can start gradually putting a little weight in it. Should be something like 6-9 weeks after surgery before I can do light activities including driving, and a full 6 months before I can resume any kind of athletic activities.

Even though I can put weight on the foot now, I’ve been practicing the no-weight-on-the-foot crutches maneuvers. Downside of living in a 3-level townhouse is lots of steps. Going down them with the no-weight method is fine but going up is a bit of a workout.

When they rupture, they surprisingly don't retract too far- the defect you can feel in the tendon is about an inch. If you treat without surgery, you cast with the foot pointed down which elevates the heel closer to the rupture.

Oh I hope that works out. I remember when the first kid in school got those pumps. I ended up with the Nike Robinsons I think they were called, I am a surfer and knew nothing about B ball.

Sneaker nerd alert!

Your pic is of the Nike Air Force 180. It’s very similar looking to Nike’s pump-up shoe, the Air Command Force .

Kinja'd!!!

But, the 180 has no pump and and is a bit newer model with a bigger air bubble in the sole.

technically not a “kickass” boot until you’ve kicked someone’s ass with it. looking forward to the video proof.

hope you heal quickly, that civic isn’t going to shift itself!

Oh yeah they were higher like that and I remember that relieve valve nubbin in the back. I also remember the three plastic eyelets in the top.

Been there done that. A nd that was the only time I was glad I had an automatic. Mine was only a partial tear so I was in the boot for a while to build up scar tissue and then off to PT to make it pliable. Luckily no surgery but I had to give up my dreams of making the NBA . The worst part is now I’m prone to tendonitis. Every couple of years it flairs up so bad I’m on crutches for a few days. I tend to pay close attention and cut down on activity for a while and it goes away. Especially important since I’m back in a manual and I can’t swap cars with my wife since she doesn’t drive manual.
